It all started with a weekly breakfast for Oklahoma City’s homeless and after observing the quality of life experienced by the breakfast guests, the question was asked, how can the cycle of addiction and despair be broken? After twenty-two years of supporting the advancement of our city's most vulnerable, we believe the answer is immediate relief of hunger and homelessness along with targeted and intensive intervention. Through our management of the WestTown Homeless Day Shelter, City Care offers meals, showers, access to community resources, case management and respite to 300 guests, 5 days a week. Those qualifying can move into one of our 104 affordable housing units at The Pershing Center or in the Westlawn Gardens neighborhood. There, they work on employment, relapse prevention, budgeting and receive on-going case management. In an attempt to change the intergenerational trajectory of poverty, City Care brought Whiz Kids to Oklahoma City. Whiz Kids is a mentorship program for children at-risk that focuses on character development and literacy. Whiz Kids serves 850 youth each year in our city.
